The short answer: a well-documented 997.2 Carrera S is, for most people, the best all-round 997 to buy in the UK today. A 997.1 can be just as rewarding, but you need to buy on its history and engine condition, not on price.
I've bought, sold and inspected more 997s than any other generation. Here's how I'd approach one if you were sitting across the table from me.
997 at a glance
| Version | Years | Engine | Typical UK price* |
|---|---|---|---|
| 997.1 Carrera / S | 2004–2008 | M97 3.6 / 3.8 | £28k–£45k |
| 997.2 Carrera / S | 2008–2012 | 9A1 3.6 / 3.8 DFI | £38k–£60k |
| 997 Turbo | 2006–2013 | Mezger 3.6 (.1) / 9A1 3.8 (.2) | £50k–£85k |
| 997 GTS | 2010–2012 | 9A1 3.8, 408bhp | £60k–£85k |

What is the difference between the 997.1 and 997.2?
The 997.2 brought the direct-injection 9A1 engine, which removed the intermediate shaft and with it the IMS bearing worry. It also introduced PDK in place of Tiptronic, LED rear lights and revised suspension. The 997.1 keeps hydraulic steering feel that many people prefer, and a well-sorted one is a lovely car, but its M97 engine needs a closer look at bore condition and IMS history.
What should I check on a 997?
- Bore scoring (997.1 especially). A borescope inspection is non-negotiable on the 3.8.
- IMS bearing history (997.1). Ask whether it has been inspected or upgraded, with invoices.
- Coolant radiators and pipes. Front radiators trap debris and corrode.
- Rear main seal and oil leaks. Small weeps are common; ask what's been done.
- PDK service history (997.2). Fluid changes at the stated intervals.
- Suspension bushes and tyres. Worn bushes are cheap clues to how a car's been kept.
Which 997 holds its value best?
In my experience: manual Carrera S and GTS coupés, the right Turbo specs, and any car with a complete, coherent history file. Cabriolets and Tiptronic 997.1s sit lower and move more slowly.
